Smartlife voluntary scheme: Saving for life’s goals

We are reimagining how we create value for our members by making saving more accessible, inclusive, and relevant to the realities of everyday life.

Every Ugandan has aspirations and milestones they would like to achieve; whether buying land, building a home, growing a business, funding their children's education, preparing for emergencies, or securing a more financially resilient future.

Through the Smartlife voluntary savings scheme, we are helping members turn these ambitions into achievable goals by providing a simple, flexible, and accessible way to save. Launched in November 2024, Smartlife continues to attract thousands of hardworking Ugandans, including traders, farmers, artisans, students, boda-boda riders, and workers across the formal and informal sectors.

During the financial year, the scheme continued to gain strong momentum, with 70,298 members enrolling and contributing UGX 138Bn.

This robust growth reflects increasing confidence in voluntary savings and demonstrates how the Fund is expanding access to social security by meeting people where they are, regardless of where they work or how they earn a living.

Beyond growing membership, Smartlife is helping to build a stronger savings culture, improve financial resilience and extend the benefits of social security to previously underserved communities, creating lasting value for members, their families and Uganda's economy.

Micro moments: From UGX 5,000 to UGX 500, building better for You

2024 — Minimum contribution

UGX

May 2026 — Minimum contribution

UGX

In 2024, when we set the minimum threshold for entry into the Smartlife Voluntary Saving Scheme at UGX 5,000, this was regarded as a progressive step towards financial inclusion. Yet among Uganda’s vast informal and non-formal segments it revealed a lingering reality: for a market vendor, farmer, youth micro-entrepreneur, UGX 5000 was a high amount.

Consequently, in May 2026, we lowered the minimum contribution from UGX 5,000 to UGX 500, shifting the narrative of voluntary and goal-based savings to promote broader participation, inclusion, and micro moment saving, particularly among Ugandans with irregular or low incomes.

This has significantly transformed savings from an end of month sacrifice into a daily frictionless impulse, closing the inequality gap while enhancing social security coverage. As we are building better for you, this broad decision is expected to further strengthen Uganda’s savings culture, securing the financial dignity of every Ugandan, 500 shillings at a time.
