Key developments in FY2025/26

We invest in exceptional people and a culture of openness, accountability and wellbeing, empowering employees to grow and create lasting value for our members.

At NSSF, we believe that our long-term success and sustainable value creation for our members is not only defined by sound governance and investment practices, but also the ability to attract, develop and retain exceptional talent. As such we promote a culture that fosters open communication, transparency, accountability, and wellbeing while empowering our employees to grow and innovatively meet our members’ needs.

Occupational safety and health: Advancing a safer and healthier workplace

At the Fund, we recognise that the health, safety, and wellbeing of our employees is a fundamental to organisational success and long-term sustainability. We therefore remain committed to providing a safe and conducive work environment where employees can perform at their best and contribute innovative solutions that support organisational growth. During the year, the Fund continued to strengthen occupational health and safety through the following initiatives:

77

Workplace safety induction for new recruits

Workplace safety induction forms an integral part of onboarding for all new recruits, ensuring that employees understand the Fund’s safety culture and its commitment to occupational health and safety.

During the year 77 newly recruited employees received safety induction covering incident reporting, emergency preparedness, and safe work practices. The induction is provided on an ongoing basis as employees join the Fund.

Capacity building for OSH champions

OSH Champions serve as safety focal points within their respective departments and across the Fund’s branch network.

This year, the Fund partnered with Africa Safety Congress, a specialist regional OSH body, to equip 50 OSH Champions with skills in Scientific OSH Auditing to strengthen hazard identification, assessment, and elimination within their work areas. The knowledge gained is intended to be cascaded across the Fund, reinforcing a proactive safety culture.

Following an assessment that identified a skills gap in the use of firefighting equipment, the Fund also engaged Booth Fire Services Limited to provide practical training on the use and maintenance of fire extinguishers. These hands-on drills strengthened employees’ competence and confidence in responding to potential fire emergencies in the workplace.

Staff and community safety sensitisations

We recognise that a strong safety culture depends on active employee participation and continuous awareness. During the year, we hosted AIGP Anatoli Muleterwa, Director of Community Policing and Crime Prevention at Uganda Police, who engaged employees on office security measures and personal safety in public spaces. The session reinforced employees’ awareness of personal security and contributed to a reduction in reported robbery and theft incidents during the year.

Personal protective equipment

Following the identification of a drowning risk for employees who cross water bodies to deliver services to customers, particularly in the Entebbe and Masaka areas, the Fund procured two pairs of life jackets for each staff member for use while undertaking such field activities. This intervention is intended to strengthen employee safety during field operations.

In addition, all Fund pantries were equipped with fire blankets to provide first-response protection and help minimise the potential impact of small, manageable fires.

Together, these interventions demonstrate the Fund’s proactive approach to identifying workplace hazards and implementing practical measures to mitigate them. In FY2026/27, the Fund will continue to strengthen this approach through expanded staff training and timely responses to emerging safety risks, with the objective of maintaining a safe working environment for all employees.

Strategic target for FY2026/27

Strengthening regulatory compliance

As part of its compliance framework, the Fund maintains up-to-date Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Certificates across all branches. Issued by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development’s Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health, these certificates provide assurance that appropriate safety requirements and controls are in place, reinforcing the Fund’s commitment to providing a safe and productive working environment in which employees can thrive.

Following the President of Uganda’s assent to the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act, 2025, which came into force on 25 July 2025, the Fund is aligning its procedures with the amended requirements to maintain regulatory compliance and further strengthen its OSH practices.
